Ponce Inlet
About Ponce Inlet
Wilbur-by-the-Sea is close to Daytona Beach and Ponce Inlet, Florida, but is a quaint town with the distinction of being one of the only two unincorporated areas along the coast in Volusia County that does not have a hotel or condo - only beachfront homes!
It is possible that the name comes from Wilbur Wright as the area is noted for having such things honoring the Wright brothers such as a life-sized Wright Flyer statue at Daytona Beach's Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The whole town is only four miles around the unincorporated area limit.
Their area code of 386 spells "fun" and the Tourism Authority promotes the area as the "Fun Coast" where the beaches are a main attraction with boating, diving, fishing, swimming, and surfing. Over two dozen golf courses and dozens of tennis courts are sprinkled throughout the county. Horseback trails are offered in several parks and recreation areas.
The unique Wilbur Boathouse was built in 1913 and is a popular place for celebrating weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions. It has been completely restored and has a 1500 square foot outdoor wharf.
The Boondocks Restaurant features seafood that is all caught locally, and the prices are generally reasonable. You can even feed the catfish there in the Halifax River!
